5 juvenile offenders aged between 15 and 18 years have escaped from lawful custody at peter Singongo correctional facility in Ndola.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba says the incident occurred between November 13, 2024 at 17:30 hours and November 14 2024 at 02:20 hours at the correctional facility.
Mr. Mweemba has said in a statement that officers who were on duty yesterday heard some noise coming from the juvenile cells and upon checking found that the 5 inmates had escaped and stuck a hand written note asking the police to forgive them as they were tired of the session.
Mr. Mweemba adds that after processing the scene, it was observed that the escapees had made an opening on the wall by removing some pan bricks using a toothbrush and two cut iron angle bars.
The Copperbelt Police Commissioner is however suspecting negligence to duties, as he wonders how the tools used found themselves in the cell.
Mr. Mweemba adds that the remaining inmates when interviewed said they were threatened if they dared to alarm the officers during the time they were digging in the wall preparing to escape.
