The Ministry of Health has disclosed that it is targeting to vaccinate over 4 million children aged between 9 months and 5 years against measles through the Rubella campaign that will be conducted in all the 116 districts across the country.
Speaking during the launch of the 2024 Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign scheduled to be conducted from 23rd to 28th September 2024, Health Minister Elijah Muchima says measles has no cure and vaccination of infants remains the most effective method for its prevention and control.
Dr Muchima says the national immunization programme plays a critical role in ensuring public health security through reduction of illnesses and deaths caused by vaccine preventable diseases including measles.
He has assured that government will continue ensuring adequate budgetary allocation for the procurement of measles and other traditional vaccines to meet the annual country needs for routine immunizations.
At the same event, World Health Organization Country Representative Nathan Bakyaita says to support the campaign, about 5 million vaccine doses have been delivered at an estimated cost of $1.1 million.
Meanwhile, Churches Health Association of Zambia Director Advocacy Planning and Development Yoram Siame, says the campaign is crucial in addressing the accumulation of risk for under 5 children and also a proactive measure to protect children from potential outbreaks.
