The Civil Society for Poverty Reduction-CSPR- has called on government to intensify its provision of maize stocks through the Food Reserve Agency -FRA- amidst looming heightened hunger.
CSPR Climate and Environmental Justice Programmes Coordinator Akayombokwa Munalula says there is also need to ensure that as many communities as possible access food especially those in highly affected areas under emergency and crisis.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Munalula further says government should also deepen its partnerships with international organizations to access additional resources and expertise in managing food crises.
He is also of the view that strengthening of local food systems by supporting smallholder farmers through interest-free loans for irrigation systems, as well as providing seeds, tools, and technical assistance, will enhance local food production and reduce reliance on emergency aid.
Meanwhile, Mr. Munalula has noted the need for long-term resilience strategies, such as promoting climate-smart agriculture and building infrastructure for irrigation as they are essential in addressing both immediate hunger and future food security risks.
He says with immediate relief efforts and long-term sustainable solutions, Zambia can better address the food insecurity crisis and build more resilient food systems.
