Lifeline Childline Zambia, an organization that offers counseling and guidance services has recorded an increase in the number of cases of suicide thoughts, attempts and successful suicide reports by about 640 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.
According to Lifeline Childline Zambia Senior Psychosocial Counselor Gibson Nyirenda, the organization has so far recorded 3,616 cases of suicide thoughts, attempts, and successful cases combined this year, compared to just 565 in the entire 2023.
Mr. Nyirenda also notes a significant rise in reported mental health issues, particularly ‘emotional distress, fear, and anxiety problems’ which rose from 489 in 2023 to 2,499 in 2024.
He has cited poverty, drug abuse among youth and social life issues such as failed relationships, as the major causes of the sharp increase in these reported vices.
The Lifeline Childline Zambia Senior Psychosocial Counselor emphasizes the urgent need for collective action to address this growing challenge, citing increased awareness and reporting as factors contributing to the surge.
