The Zambia army has cautioned all scrap metal dealers to be extra careful whenever they come across materials that they may not be familiar with as they could unknowingly be dealing with Unexploded Ordnances-UXOS.
Zambia Army Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Sydney Mwewa says the army has noted with concern the increasing risk posed by UXOS that find their way into the hands of scrap metal dealers.
Lt Col Mwewa has warned in a statement that that such materials, if handled by non-professionals can lead to catastrophic accidents, injuries and even fatalities.
He has since urged all scrap metal dealers and the general public to exercise extreme caution when collecting and processing scrap metal, as mortar shells can be lethal and cause catastrophic damage if mishandled.
Recently, two men of Kapiri Mposhi were injured as a result of mishandling explosives they thought were ordinary scrap materials while mortar shells of different sizes were also discovered in sacks at a dump site in Kapiri Mposhi district, a situation that is hazardous to the community.
