The Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research -ZIPAR- is calling for more government interventions to support vulnerable populations facing the severe impact of drought, as the current measures are not enough.
ZIPAR interim Executive Director Zali Chikuba says food access has been significantly affected, particularly in rural areas where many households lack the financial resources to prepare for the 2025 farming season.
Citing the latest living condition monitoring survey in Zambia, Mr Chikuba says there is a general increase in poverty which further worsens the challenges faced by most communities.
Mr Chikuba who acknowledged government’s efforts in providing free education, school feeding programs and cash for work as mitigate measures being undertaken says there is need for additional measures to support struggling households.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr Chikuba is also advocating for an expansion of the social cash transfer program to meet the current economic hardships being experienced by citizens.
