The Mental Health Users Network of Zambia has bemoaned the rise in the number of rehabilitation centers being set up for profit purposes at the expense of quality mental health services.
Network Chairperson Mulima Kasote says despite the increase in the number of private owned mental health rehabilitation centers, the services being provided are inadequate to address mental health challenges as focus is on profit making only.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Kasote who has attributed the rise in the number of mental health problems in the country to increased substance abuse, also says the best therapy for mental health is community based as opposed to the kind of service being provided by many of such institutions which do not expose them to the environments they are used to.
Mr. Kasote explains that mental health patients need to be exposed to the environment they live in as they undergo treatment as opposed to admitting them in some luxury structures being used which he says are also making the services unaffordable by many ordinary citizens.
Recently, Childline-lifeline an organization that offers counseling and guidance services reported that suicide cases in the country had risen to about 3000 in 2024 attributing the development to high rates of substance abuse among other reasons.
