The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union -UNZALARU-has directed its members to stay away from work effective today until management settles the unpaid November salaries.
In an interview with Phoenix News, UNZALARU Secretary General Dr. Kelvin Mambwe says the union is frustrated over continued delays in salary payments, transport allowances, and other essential benefits.
Dr. Mambwe has cautioned that the delays could disrupt critical university operations, such as examinations, and jeopardize the timely release of results hence urging the ministries of finance and education to intervene.
Dr. Mambwe is also concerned about the lack of political will to resolve the financial challenges at UNZA, particularly as the institution struggles with post-pandemic financial pressures, including internally generated funds and social fees.
He says it is embarrassing that workers at the institution are subjected to borrowing money to fund their transportation and perform their duties, while the employer shows no concern for their welfare.
Dr. Mambwe says despite several engagements, the UNZA management has failed to provide information when the workers will be paid their salaries.
