Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma has disclosed that the Zambian and Congolese governments have constituted a joint investigation team to establish what transpired in Chichele Forest Reserve in Ndola on the Copperbelt, where a Zambia National Service-ZNS Officer was shot dead after a wrangle with Congolese soldiers.
Addressing the media in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Lufuma explains that on 1st December, 2024 between 10:00 and 11:00hours, there was an exchange of gunfire between ZNS officers and soldiers from the democratic republic of Congo-DRC after a misunderstanding ensued claiming the life of one ZNS officer and injuring another.
He says the incident happened when, ZNS officers were on routine anti-smuggling patrol along Mabungo road within Kawama area during which they intercepted unidentified Zambian nationals who were attempting to smuggle mealie meal into the DRC and confiscated the commodity.
Mr. Lufuma says the smugglers managed to escape apprehension and ran into Congo where they reported to the Congolese soldiers deployed within their territory alleging that ZNS officers had crossed the border into DRC and confiscated mealie meal.
He adds that based on the wrong information, Congolese soldiers mobilized and confronted the ZNS officers to release the mealie meal and also surrender their weapons and that it was at that point when the exchange of fire occurred.
Mr. Lufuma has since confirmed that staff sergeant Corinthians Kaputa sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at Kalewa garrison hospital in Ndola while staff sergeant Jazz Banda who also sustained a gunshot was injured but that his condition remains stable and that the situation between the two countries after the incidence is calm.
