The Zambia Forestry and Forest Industry Corporation-ZAFFICO- has made a significant rise in its production capacity, from 140,000 to 240,000 poles per annum after investing over $3 million last year.
Speaking during the Commission of the ZAFFICO Corporate and Sales Office in Lusaka today, ZAFFICO Board Chairperson, Dr. Alvert Ng’andu, said this boost has seen the establishment of a wood drying kiln and creosote treatment line in addition to enhanced value addition.
According to Dr. Ng’andu, the corporation is now ready to meet both local and regional demand for treated wooden poles with another $30 million invested in an impending integrated wood processing plant.
Earlier, ZAFFICO Managing Director Mundia Mundia said the new Lusaka Corporate and Sales Office is expected to play a key role in delivering higher-value products, including treated poles, sawn timber, and soon-to-be-introduced particle boards, plywood, and briquettes.
However, Industrial Development Corporation Group Chief Executive Officer, Cornwell Muleya has challenged ZAFFICO to enhance value-addition to meet the demand for furniture, as opposed to the current situation where the country relies on imports despite the availability of various tree resources.
