Agricultural Expert Oliver Bulaya says Zambia’s food security is likely to be affected by the long lasting impact that Tropical Cyclone Chido will have on crops that will be significantly damaged due to the distractive rains.
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- and the Zambia Meteorological Department have warned that some parts of the country may be affected indirectly by Cyclone Chido, which has caused substantial rain and strong winds in Sinda, Katete, and Chilubi Districts.
Dr. Bulaya is concerned that most crops are in their early stages and may be submerged by rains, causing crop loss, thereby putting Zambia’s food security at risk.
He tells Phoenix News that with the country already facing the effects of climate change, this natural disaster will worsen food production next year.
Dr. Bulaya has also cautioned farmers who have not been affected to take serious precautions to secure their various farming activities.
