Opposition People’s Alliance for Change Leader Andyford Banda has called on current public office bearers to take lessons from the current anti-corruption crusade and avoid engaging in the misuse of public resources.
Mr Banda is reacting to a ruling by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court which ordered the forfeiture of a US$2.5 million Simoonga Farm in Chikankata district owned by former ministry of defence permanent secretary Sturdy Mwale.
In its judgment, the court ruled that the anti-corruption commission had provided sufficient evidence to prove that the farm was tainted with proceeds from illegal activities.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Banda has emphasized the importance of strengthening the country’s legal framework to ensure that law enforcement agencies can operate effectively, without fear or favour.
He is of the view that stronger laws can enable law enforcement officers to carry out their duties without concern for political retribution, particularly when dealing with individuals in influential government positions.
