The Bloggers of Zambia is calling for the postponement of the enactment of the Cyber Security Bill and Cybercrimes Bill due to concerns regarding constitutional irregularities and procedural shortcomings surrounding the ongoing enactment process.
Bloggers of Zambia Chief Executive Officer Richard Mulonga is calling on the government to listen to the voice of reason and withdraw the bills from parliament to allow for re-alignment to best practices.
Mr Mulonga says the enactment process, which seeks to introduce important laws impacting digital rights and governance have raised significant red flags regarding transparency, inclusivity, adequate participation and adherence to constitutional principles.
He says the enactment of robust and balanced cyber legislation is essential in today’s digital age to protect citizens, businesses and national security interests but the current approach by the government risks undermining the very principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law that it claims to safeguard.
Mr Mulonga has since urged Zambians to remain vigilant and engaged as the fight for a just and balanced digital future belongs to them.
Cabinet has approved the publication and introduction of the cyber security bill 2024 and the cybercrimes bill 2024 in the current sitting of parliament.
