A calm morning rush in the ever busy Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, Zambia is every travellers experience. With a sense of urgency propelling my steps, I navigated through throngs of traveler’s, each with their own destination in mind. My heart raced with anticipation as I embarked on a journey that promised to be nothing short of extraordinary—a three-day cruise aboard the magnificent MSC Splendida, from Durban to Cape Town.
Having barely caught my connecting flight at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, I finally found a moment to catch my breath as I settled into my seat for the final leg of the journey. The sprawling expanse of the airport had been a maze of terminals and gates, but now, as the plane taxied down the runway, a sense of excitement washed over me. The next destination: Durban, where the adventure would truly begin.
Touching down at King Shaka International Airport, I was greeted by the warm embrace of the African sun and the salty tang of the ocean breeze. From there, I was whisked away to the Sun International Sibaya Lodge, a tranquil oasis nestled among the rolling green hills of KwaZulu-Natal, overlooking the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. It was here, amidst the serene beauty of the landscape, that I joined a cohort of journalists and content creators from across Africa, united by a shared passion for exploration and discovery.
Later in the evening after we had settled, we had a brief interaction session where all the members of the cohort would meet and exchange pleasantries. It was then that we were introduced to the dazzling Thobi Rose, the cruise’s shining star. After the brief we exchanged introductions, and during our conversation luck or maybe a touch of destiny struck as she offered a sneak peek at her upcoming episode of her latest escapades.
The journey was part of a larger initiative spearheaded by the South African Ministry of Tourism, aimed at showcasing the country’s myriad attractions to the world. It was a three-day media tour that had journalists and content creators from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Kenya, Lesotho, and South Africa who embarked on a voyage that transcended mere travel; it was a celebration of shared culture, a platform for networking, and an immersion into the breath taking beauty of South Africa.
After a restful night at the Sun International Sibaya Lodge it was time to head out to the Durban port where we’d find the cruise terminal. The Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal shimmered under the midday sun, but it was a different kind of brilliance that stole my breath away. Docked majestically, dwarfing everything around her, was the MSC Splendida. I’d seen pictures, read descriptions, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer splendour of this floating palace.
Imagine a modern marvel sculpted from gleaming white steel, towering decks rose one above the other like a layer cake fit for giants. But the MSC Splendida wasn’t just imposing; it exuded an undeniable elegance. The entire vessel seemed to be in constant dialogue with the ocean, a harmonious blend of human ingenuity and natural beauty.
As I drew closer, intricate details emerged. The name, MSC Splendida, inscribed in bold lettering, spoke of its luxurious promise. Intricate carvings adorned the hull, hinting at a bygone era of maritime voyages with a touch of modern flair. It wasn’t just a ship; it was a portal, an invitation to a world of adventure, indulgence, and breath taking vistas. Standing there, on the verge of this extraordinary journey, a wave of awe washed over me. The MSC Splendida wasn’t just a mode of transportation; it was a destination in itself, a gleaming promise whispered on the salty breeze.
As I boarded the MSC Splendida, the sheer magnificence of the ship took my breath away. From its towering decks to its opulent interiors, every inch of the vessel exuded an air of prestige and luxury. As the Indian Ocean stretched out before me, shimmering in the sunlight, I felt a sense of anticipation building—an anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead, and the memories I would create.
