Development Expert Dr. Charity Musamba says government should be worried about the quality of life for its citizens following an increase in the cost of living that is almost getting to 11,000 for a family of five.
The cost of living in Zambia has surged to alarming levels, with the latest figures from the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection -JCTR- showing that a family of five now needs around K10, 833 to meet their basic needs, representing a K440 increase from the previous K10, 393 last month.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Dr. Musamba says the escalating cost of living is an indication of the difficult time families are experiencing in buying basic needs, especially when people’s incomes remain low.
Dr. Musamba has acknowledged that Zambia is facing significant economic challenges, including climate change and the austerity economic response program.
She has however emphasized that the government must take proactive steps to address these challenges and provide support to struggling families.
