Former President Edgar Lungu has instructed his lawyers to legally challenge the continued detention of two brothers Elijah and Ernest for nearly two months without a charge for allegedly mocking President Hakainde Hichilema on TikTok.
The brothers, aged 26 and 22, originally from Kalulushi on the Copperbelt were arrested on October 3, 2024, before being transported to Lusaka and have been in detention at Ridgeway Police Station.
According to a statement posted on his Facebook page, Mr. Lungu has described the continued detention of the two brothers as malicious which he says should stop
Meanwhile, the Zambia we want is saddened that the two brothers have allegedly been denied police bond or the opportunity to exercise their fundamental right to appear before a court for a bail hearing.
In a statement, Zambia We Want Interim Spokesperson Muhabi Lungu is concerned that the law is persistently being abrogated by the police in regard to this trending illegal and inhumane treatment of accused persons with the Elijah and Ernest case, now representing the fifth case in the last three months since the dentition of Jason Mwanza, Chanda Chikwanka and Thomas Zulu.
Mr. Lungu has described the action by the police as totally unacceptable and has demanded that the youths be released immediately or charged and be brought before the courts.
