Energy Expert Dr. Johnstone Chikwanda says it is encouraging to note the ongoing conversations around Liquefied Petroleum Gas -LPG bulk supply possibilities for Zambia after the closure of Indeni refinery which was producing LPG.
The government has disclosed ongoing bilateral talks with some gas producers to grow the LPG sector and make the alternative source of energy more affordable within a few years in Zambia.
Dr. Chikwanda says there is a need to make the sale of LPG mandatory for every filling station as is the case for petrol or diesel, enable other distribution points and to ensure that consumers with unbranded cylinders are refilled by all suppliers without being sent away.
He has also suggested that to sustain the bulk delivery based on a least cost strategy, a gas pipeline will be the best option instead of the current methodology where gas is being brought in by trucks.
Dr. Chikwanda is worried that there are only a few LPG tankers in Zambia with the country mainly being served by LPG tankers from other countries, posing a threat to the security of supply once demand in those countries spikes further.
