Government has renewed its determination to lift citizens out of poverty, targeting a significant reduction from the current estimated rate of 60 percent to levels compatible with sustainable livelihoods.
Speaking at the official opening of a 3 days Southern Africa Regional Poverty Reduction and Climate Resilience conference in Lusaka today, Vice president Mutale Nalumango expressed concern that, despite abundant natural resources, the region has seen little progress in alleviating poverty.
Mrs. Nalumango has urged participants to abandon the notion that simply changing political leadership can cure deep seated social and economic challenges, to instead develop concrete, home-grown strategies that focus on the African continent.
At the same event, British ambassador to Zambia Rebecca Terzeon said the rising temperatures particularly in Zambia is exacerbating poverty, noting that climate shifts have pushed more than 700 million people worldwide into extreme hardship and undermined key sectors such as agriculture.
And Community Development and Social Services Minister Doreen Mwamba said the conference, which runs from today to 15 May, will assess existing policies across the region with the aim of producing actionable recommendations and delegates will map out collaborative, and inclusive solutions that address both the root causes of poverty and the accelerating impacts of climate change.
