Science and Technology Minister Felix Mutati says a safe and secure cyberspace is key to supporting Zambia’s prospects for economic growth because without proper cybersecurity measures, the country’s digital transformation is at serious risk.
Speaking at the launch of the ABSA Cyberthon in Lusaka today, Mr. Mutati said cyber threats posed serious dangers to the economy, especially in the financial sector, hence calling for stronger collaborations between government, financial institutions, and tech industry to tackle these challenges.
Mr. Mutati says the current scale of potential loss demonstrates the importance of cybersecurity as a foundation for economic development especially that Zambia increasingly relies on digital systems in banking and other sectors.
The minister has also highlighted the need to upgrade Zambia’s digital infrastructure to attract global tech investments from companies like Google and Netflix.
And ABSA Bank Managing Director Mizinga Melu explained that the ABSA Cyberthon, is part of the bank’s initiative to support Zambia’s digital economy by ensuring that its financial systems and critical infrastructure remain protected.
