Historian Bizeck Phiri has observed that the formation of political alliances ahead of the 2026 general elections is weakening the opposition in the country.
Professor Phiri has also charged that by joining the UPND Alliance, the opposition MMD has automatically dissolved itself as it will not have a presidential candidate in the 2026 election.
He tells Phoenix News that rather than joining political alliances, the opposition should have been working towards selling themselves to the electorate ahead of the 2026 polls.
Professor Phiri has wondered how the opposition will offer credible checks and balances to the ruling party seeing that they are all joining the ruling party and praising it’s performance so far.
He says the MMD joining the UPND Alliance is however not strange as most opposition political parties have nothing at the grassroots and are just on paper.
