Local Truck and Tanker Drivers have given the government a 7 day ultimatum in which to stop the illegal employment of foreign nationals by some transporters as drivers.
In an interview with Phoenix News, the drivers say they are concerned about government’s continued silence on the matter despite engaging various government ministries which include the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Immigration.
Activists against Employment of Foreign Truck and Tanker Drivers in Zambia Spokesperson Solomon Mumba say the influx of foreign drivers in the transport sector should not be taken lightly as it is making many local drivers unemployed.
Mr. Mumba adds that it is unfortunate that despite all efforts to engage the government, nothing seems to be done about adding that it is a time bomb that should not be allowed to explode as it will affect everyone and the economy.
And Zambia Union of Tanker Drivers and Allied Workers-ZUTDAW National Trustee Billiat Munengo said the planned protest by both the truck and tanker drivers is not intended to fight the government but a step in fighting for their wellbeing.
Mr. Munengo explains that the transport sector has been infiltrated by a lot of foreign nationals and that this is taking away jobs from the locals thereby throwing many into abject poverty.
