The Millers Association of Zambia -MAZ has disclosed that none of its members has imported maize from neighboring countries so far despite government’s decision to lift the maize import ban in July this year that will allow imports from Tanzania until April 2025.
MAZ President Andrew Chintala however says the millers may consider imports if need arises once an assessment is done on the availability of the grain on the local market.
Mr. Chintala assures that if the need for importation arises, millers will follow the laid down import procedure to avoid the aflatoxin situation that the country experienced a few months ago.
He has also indicated that currently the government through the Food Reserve Agency -FRA- and disaster mitigation unit –DMMU- is importing maize intended specifically to address the impact of drought on vulnerable communities.
