Oil Marketing Companies Association of Zambia president Dr. Kafula Mubanga has warned that Zambia may experience further erratic shortages of fuel in the coming days due to protests in Mozambique.
According to communication by Puma Energy, the company had instructed its transporters to park all trucks by close of business yesterday, amid a one-week protest in Mozambique following disputed elections in that country, sparking concerns of erratic fuel shortages in Zambia.
And Dr. Mubanga, who has confirmed the protest in Mozambique to Phoenix News, scheduled from today, October 31 to November 7, 2024, says this development will disrupt fuel supply lines for various OMCs, putting pressure on Zambia’s strained energy sector that has already dipped into its strategic fuel reserves.
He says these current disruptive challenges from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, should serve as a reminder that Zambia’s lifeline is hinged on investing in pipelines from both Mozambique and Angola to guarantee supply.
Dr. Mubanga believes a proactive approach devoid of political rhetoric, is needed to stabilize fuel supply and pricing, but is worried that the Mozambique protest will worsen ongoing fuel shortages as witnessed in various parts of the country.
