President Hakainde Hichilema this morning led Defence Chiefs, members of the Diplomatic Corps and citizens in laying wreaths at the Freedom Statue in Lusaka in remembrance of departed heroes and heroines who fought for Zambia’s independence as the country celebrates 60 years of independence
After the Wreath Laying ceremony, the Head of State proceeded to the Presidential Burial Site to pay his respect to former Heads of State who are burial there before heading to the Lusaka show grounds for an investiture ceremony.
And in his homily, Zambia Correctional Service Head of Chaplaincy Assistant Commissioner Reverend Sam Zulu commended the UPND administration for advocating for strong family values and promoting unity in the country.
Meanwhile, Transparency International Zambia says this year`s independence day is an opportunity to reflect on the country`s progress, acknowledge ongoing challenges and renew its dedication to the ideals of democracy, integrity and justice.
TIZ Executive Director Maurice Nyambe says Zambia has undoubtedly, made strides in development, but the enduring challenge of corruption continues to undermine the nation’s potential.
Mr. Nyambe says the nation`s 60th anniversary is a reminder of the urgent need for greater accountability and transparency.
And United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia-UPPZ leader Charles Chanda has challenged politicians both in government and opposition to reflect on their roles in addressing the nation’s enduring struggles as the country commemorates 60 years of independence.
